PARTNER GAMES — FOLLOW-THE-PATH BOARD GAMES & I'M OUT CARD GAME

Follow-the-Path Board Games (Sorts 31–33, 35–40): Students match the syllable pattern they draw from the card pile to words on the game board, adding the appropriate final syllable to make their move along the path. Each game includes a recording sheet for easy teacher check-ins.

Included for each spelling topic:

  • Teacher Directions
  • Board Game
  • Game Cards
  • Student-Friendly Directions
  • Recording Sheet
  • Answer Key

I'm Out Card Game (Sort 34): Students play a shedding-style card game, matching word or picture cards to a draw card featuring final unaccented syllables, comparative adjectives, agents, and wild cards — racing to get rid of all their cards and win.

Included for each spelling topic:

  • Teacher Directions
  • Word and Picture Playing Cards
  • Student-Friendly Directions
  • Recording Sheet
  • Answer Key

INDEPENDENT ACTIVITIES — LAYER ON & FOUR IN A ROW

Layer On (Sorts 31–33, 35–40): Played much like a popular letter tile game, students spin an unaccented final syllable or inflectional ending, match it with a word or base word card to make a word, then add it to a growing word tower — layering on as many words as possible. Can also be modified for partner play.

Included for each spelling topic:

  • Teacher Directions
  • Word Building Mat
  • Word Cards
  • Spinner with Student-Friendly Directions
  • Letter Tiles for Building Words
  • Recording Sheet
  • Answer Key

Four in a Row (Sort 34): Students spin a spinner, find a word or image on the game board matching the final syllable pattern spun, cover it, record it, and aim to cover four in a row vertically, horizontally, or diagonally.

Included for each spelling topic:

  • Teacher Directions
  • 4 Word Boards
  • 2 Spinners with Student-Friendly Directions
  • Letter Tiles for Building Words
  • Recording Sheet
  • Answer Key

WHO ARE THESE GAMES FOR?

These activities are designed for students in the middle of the Syllables and Affixes stage who make spelling errors in final unaccented syllables — relying solely on sound rather than learning the patterns that represent those schwa sounds. For example, they may spell "battle" as "battel," "dollar" as "doller," or "human" as "humin."

Developed primarily for 3rd–5th graders, these resources can also be used in lower grades within small group lessons with teacher guidance. Because all games and activities across Unit 6 use similar formats, you only have to teach students how to play once — then enjoy the consistency and versatility all year long!
