ABOUT THE SYLLABLES & AFFIXES STAGE
In this stage, students shift from single-syllable word study into multisyllabic words. Typically beginning in third grade and extending into upper elementary, students explore inflectional endings, syllable juncture patterns, long vowel patterns in accented syllables, ambiguous and r-controlled vowels, silent consonants, and complex consonant combinations — as well as prefixes, suffixes, compound words, and homophones. Students who have mastered vowel patterns in single-syllable words are developmentally ready to tackle longer, more complex words.
