Want to transform spelling and word study into a time your students actually look forward to? This Syllable Juncture Patterns Games Bundle gives you everything you need to engage students in mastering open and closed syllables, syllable division, and VCV, VCCV, and VV spelling patterns — all in a format that builds consistency, excitement, and mastery.

Save 50% when you grab all 9 units in the Syllables and Affixes Mega Bundle!

Aligned to Words Their Way Unit 3 (Sorts 13–17), these games and activities work with any word study program and help students identify where syllables join in multisyllabic words and use their knowledge of open and closed syllables to determine whether a vowel sound is long or short.

5 GAMES, 5 ACTIVITIES FOR THE FOLLOWING SYLLABLE JUNCTURE PATTERNS

  • Sort 13: Syllable Juncture in VCV and VCCV Patterns
  • Sort 14: More Syllable Juncture in VCV and VCCV Patterns
  • Sort 15: Syllable Juncture in VCV and VVCV Patterns
  • Sort 16: Syllable Juncture in VCCCV and VV Patterns
  • Sort 17: Open and Closed Syllables and Inflected Endings

You get one partner game and one independent activity for each Syllable Juncture Patterns Word List. Resources come in both color and black & white versions!

PARTNER GAMES — CANDYLAND-STYLE BOARD GAMES

Students draw a picture or spelling pattern hint card and find the matching word on the game board to make their move along the path — played like Candyland with a Chutes and Ladders twist. Each game includes a recording sheet for easy teacher check-ins.

Included for each spelling topic:

  • Teacher Directions
  • Board Game
  • Game Cards
  • Student-Friendly Directions
  • Recording Sheet
  • Answer Key

INDEPENDENT ACTIVITIES — FOUR IN A ROW

Students spin a spinner, find a word or image on the game board matching the vowel pattern or spelling change spun, cover it, build the word with optional letter tiles, record it, and aim to cover four in a row vertically, horizontally, or diagonally. Can also be modified for partner play.

Included for each spelling topic:

  • Teacher Directions
  • 4 Word Boards
  • 2 Spinners with Student-Friendly Directions
  • Letter Tiles for Building Words
  • Recording Sheet
  • Answer Key

WHO ARE THESE GAMES FOR?

These activities are designed for students in the middle of the Syllables and Affixes stage who often make spelling errors where syllables join — for example spelling "summer" as "sumer" or "tiger" as "tigger" — showing they don't yet understand the connection between open and closed syllables and long and short vowel sounds.

Developed primarily for 3rd–5th graders, these resources can also be used in lower grades within small group lessons with teacher guidance. Because all games and activities across Unit 3 use similar formats, you only have to teach students how to play once — then enjoy the consistency and versatility all year long!
