Looking for a fresh way to make spelling word lists more engaging and meaningful? Unlock the List transforms your typical word sort into a brain-filled puzzle that has students cracking the code and strengthening their spelling skills at the same time. The word lists in this activity cover inflectional endings, compound words, syllable juncture patterns, long vowel patterns in accented syllables, unaccented syllables, exploring consonants, prefixes and suffixes, and more.

Each word list is aligned to Words Their Way (3rd Edition) Syllables & Affixes stage and is appropriate for mid-to-late 3rd grade and 4th grade spellers, as well as for differentiation and remediation in upper grades.

HOW IT WORKS

Students encounter their weekly or bi-weekly spelling word list with missing letters — vowels, word parts, affixes, inflected endings, silent consonants, prefixes, suffixes, and more — and are challenged to "unlock the list" by filling in the blanks. As students crack the code, they begin noticing connections among words, analyzing spelling patterns, vowel sounds, and word structures to uncover the word study focus. Use it as an entry point into a new word study list or as a reinforcement activity after students have completed their sorts.

ABOUT THE SYLLABLES & AFFIXES STAGE

In this stage, students shift from single-syllable word study into multisyllabic words. Typically beginning in third grade and extending into upper elementary, students explore inflectional endings, syllable juncture patterns, long vowel patterns in accented syllables, ambiguous and r-controlled vowels, silent consonants, and complex consonant combinations — as well as prefixes, suffixes, compound words, and homophones. Students who have mastered vowel patterns in single-syllable words are developmentally ready to tackle longer, more complex words.
