PARTNER GAMES — FILL-IN-THE-ROOT BOARD GAMES

Students take turns spinning and moving their pawns along a game board path, filling in missing roots along the way to reach the end first. The fill-in-the-blank format encourages students to try different roots to find the one that makes sense, while the recording sheet requires them to develop definitions connecting back to the root meaning. Each game includes a recording sheet for easy teacher check-ins.

Included for each spelling topic:

  • Board Game (2 versions)
  • Double Spinners
  • Teacher Directions
  • Student-Friendly Directions
  • Recording Sheet
  • Answer Key

INDEPENDENT ACTIVITIES — FOUR IN A ROW

Students spin a spinner, find a definition, sentence, or image on the game board matching the root or word part hint spun, cover it, record it, and aim to cover four in a row vertically, horizontally, or diagonally. Can also be modified for partner play.

Included for each spelling topic:

  • Teacher Directions
  • 4 Word Boards
  • 2 Spinners with Student-Friendly Directions
  • Recording Sheet
  • Answer Key

WHY FOCUS ON LATIN AND GREEK WORD PARTS?

Over 60% of words in the English language contain Greek or Latin roots — a number that climbs to 90% in science and technology content. A single root can help students generate over 100 words, and enhancing morphological awareness accelerates vocabulary development and increases reading comprehension. These games give students the master key to unlocking word meanings across all content areas!

WHO ARE THESE GAMES FOR?

These activities are designed for students in the middle to late Derivational Relations stage — primarily 3rd through 6th grade — who are already familiar with prefixes and suffixes and how they contribute to word meaning. Because Units 5, 6, 7, and 8 all use similar game formats, you only have to teach students how to play once — then enjoy the consistency and versatility all year long!
