PARTNER GAMES — VOCABULARY CARNIVAL & CONNECT 8

Vocabulary Carnival (Sorts 1, 3–5): Students draw cards and move their pawns along a game board path, defining words and performing bonus vocabulary exercises along the way — racing to reach the end before their opponent. Each game includes a recording sheet for easy teacher check-ins.

Included for each spelling topic:

  • Teacher Directions
  • Board Game
  • Game Cards
  • Student-Friendly Directions
  • Recording Sheet
  • Answer Key

Connect 8 (Sort 2): Students find base words within sentences on a game board where a suffix can be added or a part of speech altered, in an engaging strategic dice-rolling game.

  • Board Game
  • Student-Friendly Directions
  • Recording Sheet
  • Answer Key

INDEPENDENT ACTIVITIES — AFFIX SPIN & FILL-IN

Students spin for a suffix, prefix, or clue and are challenged to add the appropriate missing affix within a given sentence. Can also be modified for partner play.

  • Teacher Directions
  • 3 Word Boards
  • 2 Spinners with Student-Friendly Directions
  • Recording Sheet
  • Answer Key

WHO ARE THESE GAMES FOR?

These activities are designed for students at the beginning of the Derivational Relations stage — upper elementary through early middle grades — who already know the spelling and meaning of many words in this unit but have not yet been challenged to examine the connections between words when focusing on affixes. Because all games and activities across Unit 1 use similar formats, you only have to teach students how to play once — then enjoy the consistency and versatility all year long!
