Aligned to Words Their Way Unit 8 (Sorts 32–37), these games and activities work with any word study program and help students tackle some of the most challenging spelling decisions proficient spellers face: choosing between -ent/-ant and -ence/-ance, distinguishing -able from -ible, understanding prefix assimilation with in-, and knowing when to double consonants when adding inflectional endings to multisyllabic words.

6 GAMES, 6 ACTIVITIES FOR THE FOLLOWING SPELLING-MEANING PATTERNS

  • Sort 32: Suffixes -ENT/-ENCE and -ANT/-ANCE
  • Sort 33: Suffixes -ENT/-ENCE/-ENCY and -ANT/-ANCE/-ANCY
  • Sort 34: Suffixes -ABLE/-IBLE
  • Sort 35: Adding -ABLE/-IBLE (E-Drop; Y to I)
  • Sort 36: Prefix Assimilation IN-
  • Sort 37: Accent and Doubling Consonants

You get one partner game and one independent activity for each Spelling-Meaning Patterns 3 Word List. Resources come in both color and black & white versions!

PARTNER GAMES — LINKED!, ASSIMILATION STATION & DOUBLE OR NOTHING

Linked! (Sorts 32–35): Students draw cards and move their pawns along a game board path, searching for and recording words that are "linked" in spelling and meaning as they race to reach the end before their opponent. Each game includes a recording sheet for easy teacher check-ins.

Included for each spelling topic:

  • Teacher Directions
  • Board Game
  • Game Cards
  • Student-Friendly Directions
  • Recording Sheet
  • Answer Key

Assimilation Station (Sort 36): Students draw cards and move their pawns along a game board path, identifying the correct prefix to use, defining words, and creating sentences along the way to reach the end first.

Included for each spelling topic:

  • Teacher Directions
  • Board Game
  • Game Cards
  • Student-Friendly Directions
  • Recording Sheet
  • Answer Key

Double or Nothing (Sort 37): Students draw cards and move their pawns along a game board path, adding the appropriate suffix along the way to reach the end before their opponent.

  • Teacher Directions
  • Board Game
  • Game Cards
  • Student-Friendly Directions
  • Recording Sheet
  • Answer Key

INDEPENDENT ACTIVITIES — SUFFIX MATCH & STACK & AFFIX SPIN & FILL-IN

Suffix Match & Stack (Sorts 32–35): Students match sentence cards containing missing suffixes, then add the word to a gridded mat by connecting it with other words — played much like Scrabble. Can also be modified for partner play.

Included for each spelling topic:

  • Teacher Directions
  • Game Cards (32–50 sentences per activity)
  • Gridded Word Building Mat
  • Recording Sheet
  • Answer Key

Affix Spin & Fill-In (Sorts 36–37): Students spin for a suffix or clue and are challenged to add the appropriate missing suffix within a given sentence.

Included for each spelling topic:

  • Teacher Directions
  • 3 Word Boards (48 sentences)
  • 2 Spinners with Student-Friendly Directions
  • Recording Sheet
  • Answer Key

WHO ARE THESE GAMES FOR?

These activities are designed for students in the middle of the Derivational Relations stage — upper elementary through early middle grades — who have already been working with the meanings of the words, roots, and affixes highlighted in this unit and are ready to tackle the spelling decisions that challenge even proficient spellers. Because all games and activities across Unit 8 use similar formats, you only have to teach students how to play once — then enjoy the consistency and versatility all year long!
