Looking for a fresh way to make spelling word lists more engaging and meaningful? Unlock the List transforms your typical word sort into a brain-filled puzzle that has students cracking the code and strengthening their spelling skills at the same time. The word lists in this activity cover prefixes, suffixes, derivational suffixes, the suffix -ion, spelling-meaning patterns, Latin and Greek word parts, prefix assimilation, and more.
Each word list is aligned to Words Their Way (3rd Edition) Derivational Relations stage and is appropriate for 4th grade, 5th grade, and 6th grade spellers, as well as for differentiation and remediation in upper grades.
HOW IT WORKS
Students encounter their weekly or bi-weekly spelling word list with missing letters — vowels, word parts, Greek and Latin affixes, prefixes, suffixes, and more — and are challenged to "unlock the list" by filling in the blanks. As students crack the code, they begin noticing connections among words, analyzing spelling patterns, vowel sounds, and word structures to uncover the word study focus. Use it as an entry point into a new word study list or as a reinforcement activity after students have completed their sorts.

ABOUT THE DERIVATIONAL RELATIONS STAGE
This stage is where students begin connecting spelling with meaning on a deeper level. Typically spanning grades 4–6 and beyond, students at this level are proficient with foundational spelling patterns and ready to explore advanced word study concepts including prefixes, suffixes, derivational suffixes, consonant and vowel alternation, and Latin and Greek roots. By analyzing how words are built, students strengthen spelling while expanding vocabulary and overall language skills.
