Reignite student interest in word study! These vowel pattern review games help students decode and spell one-syllable words with the CVVC, CVC, CVCC, and CVCe patterns, in words like chief, wrap, smell, and whine. It's a great review before students start adding inflected endings.

The games are aligned to Words Their Way: Word Sorts for Syllables and Affixes Spellers (3rd Edition), Unit 1, Sort 1, but they work alongside any word study program. They're designed for students at the beginning of the Syllables and Affixes stage who have a solid understanding of vowel patterns in single-syllable words and are ready to learn the rules for adding inflected endings.

WHAT'S INCLUDED

Collect Violets for the Vase and Conquer Board Game (Partner Game)

Students take turns drawing a picture or hint card and moving to the word on the game board that matches it. Played much like "Candyland," with a recording sheet that makes it easy to check that students identified each vowel pattern.

Four In A Row (Independent Activity)

Students spin for a vowel pattern (CVVC, CVC, CVCC, or CVCe), find an incomplete word on the word board, and complete it by adding the missing vowels. They build the word with letter tiles (optional) and record it, trying to cover four words in a row.

  • Teacher directions
  • 4 word boards
  • 2 spinners with student-friendly directions
  • Letter tiles for building words
  • Recording sheet

ABOUT THE SYLLABLES AND AFFIXES STAGE

This stage is where students move from studying single-syllable words to examining what happens where syllables meet. Students at this level are secure with vowel patterns in one-syllable words and are ready to study inflected endings, syllable juncture and division, open and closed syllables, accented and unaccented syllables, and the first prefixes and suffixes. Instruction focuses on the spelling changes that happen when endings are added and on where to divide a longer word. By analyzing multisyllabic words, students strengthen spelling while preparing for the meaning-based word study ahead.
