Not every VCV word has a long vowel. These syllable division games for VCV and VVCV patterns help students see that the first vowel in a VCV word is usually long (human, pilot, and lazy) but is sometimes short (seven, limit, and present), and that VVCV words have a Long Vowel sound in the first syllable (reason, meeting, and leader).

The games are aligned to Words Their Way: Word Sorts for Syllables and Affixes Spellers (3rd Edition), Unit 3, Sort 15, but they work alongside any word study program. They're designed for students in the middle of the Syllables and Affixes stage who make spelling errors where syllables join, such as spelling summer as "sumer" or tiger as "tigger."

WHAT'S INCLUDED

Intersection Decisions Board Game (Partner Game)

Students draw a picture or syllable pattern card and move to the matching word on the game board path. It plays like Candy Land with a Chutes and Ladders twist, and the recording sheet makes it easy to check that students understood the syllable patterns.

  • Game cards
  • Student-friendly directions
  • Recording sheet
  • Answer key

Four In A Row (Independent Activity)

Students spin for a syllable pattern (VCV long, VCV short, or VVCV), then find and cover a matching word or picture on one of the 4 word boards. They build the word with letter tiles (optional) and record it, trying to cover four words or pictures in a row.

  • 4 word boards
  • 2 spinners with student-friendly directions
  • Letter tiles for building words
  • Recording sheet
  • Answer key

ABOUT THE SYLLABLES AND AFFIXES STAGE

This stage is where students move from studying single-syllable words to examining what happens where syllables meet. Students at this level are secure with vowel patterns in one-syllable words and are ready to study inflected endings, syllable juncture and division, open and closed syllables, accented and unaccented syllables, and the first prefixes and suffixes. Instruction focuses on the spelling changes that happen when endings are added and on where to divide a longer word. By analyzing multisyllabic words, students strengthen spelling while preparing for the meaning-based word study ahead.
