Build on open and closed syllables with these VCV and VCCV syllable division games. Students learn that when two consonants sit in the middle of a word, whether double consonants or different consonants, the vowel before them is usually short (funny, finger, bottom, and chapter), and that an open first syllable in a VCV word has a Long Vowel sound (female, duty, and moment).
The games are aligned to Words Their Way: Word Sorts for Syllables and Affixes Spellers (3rd Edition), Unit 3, Sort 14, but they work alongside any word study program. They're designed for students in the middle of the Syllables and Affixes stage who make spelling errors where syllables join, such as spelling summer as "sumer" or tiger as "tigger."

Critical Junctures Board Game (Partner Game)

ABOUT THE SYLLABLES AND AFFIXES STAGE
This stage is where students move from studying single-syllable words to examining what happens where syllables meet. Students at this level are secure with vowel patterns in one-syllable words and are ready to study inflected endings, syllable juncture and division, open and closed syllables, accented and unaccented syllables, and the first prefixes and suffixes. Instruction focuses on the spelling changes that happen when endings are added and on where to divide a longer word. By analyzing multisyllabic words, students strengthen spelling while preparing for the meaning-based word study ahead.
