Is it vowle, vowal, or vowel? These agent and comparative spelling games teach students that comparative adjectives are always spelled with -ER (bigger, faster, and longer), while agents, or people who do things, can end in -ER, -AR, or -OR (dancer, actor, and beggar).
The games are aligned to Words Their Way: Word Sorts for Syllables and Affixes Spellers (3rd Edition), Unit 6, Sort 34, but they work alongside any word study program. They're designed for students in the middle of the Syllables and Affixes stage who rely on sound alone in unaccented syllables, spelling words like battle, dollar, or human as "battel," "doller," or "humin."

ABOUT THE SYLLABLES AND AFFIXES STAGE
This stage is where students move from studying single-syllable words to examining what happens where syllables meet. Students at this level are secure with vowel patterns in one-syllable words and are ready to study inflected endings, syllable juncture and division, open and closed syllables, accented and unaccented syllables, and the first prefixes and suffixes. Instruction focuses on the spelling changes that happen when endings are added and on where to divide a longer word. By analyzing multisyllabic words, students strengthen spelling while preparing for the meaning-based word study ahead.
