Give students hands-on practice with past tense spelling rules. These adding -ED spelling games teach students to double the final consonant in CVC words (grabbed, stepped, and dropped), drop the silent E in CVCe words (saved, closed, and scored), and make no change to CVCC and CVVC words (joined, seemed, and helped).

The games are aligned to Words Their Way: Word Sorts for Syllables and Affixes Spellers (3rd Edition), Unit 1, Sort 5, but they work alongside any word study program. They're designed for students at the beginning of the Syllables and Affixes stage who have a solid understanding of vowel patterns in single-syllable words and are ready to learn the rules for adding inflected endings.

WHAT'S INCLUDED

Making Alterations Board Game (Partner Game)

Students take turns drawing a picture or word card, covering the matching base word on the game board, and adding -ED. Players try to collect the most words, and the recording sheet makes it easy to check their spelling.

Layer On! (Independent Activity)

Played much like a popular letter tile game, students spin for a spelling rule (double, E-drop, or just add -ED) and match it to a word part card. They add -ED, then write the word on the gridded mat so it connects to the words already there.

  • Teacher directions
  • Gridded mat for word building
  • Word part cards
  • Spinner
  • Recording sheet
  • Answer key

ALSO INCLUDED

  • Black and white and color versions of everything

ABOUT THE SYLLABLES AND AFFIXES STAGE

This stage is where students move from studying single-syllable words to examining what happens where syllables meet. Students at this level are secure with vowel patterns in one-syllable words and are ready to study inflected endings, syllable juncture and division, open and closed syllables, accented and unaccented syllables, and the first prefixes and suffixes. Instruction focuses on the spelling changes that happen when endings are added and on where to divide a longer word. By analyzing multisyllabic words, students strengthen spelling while preparing for the meaning-based word study ahead.
