Looking for a simple, consistent way to bridge the gap between school spelling instruction and at-home practice? This Weekly Spelling Homework Bundle was designed with busy teachers and families in mind — ready-to-use word lists and take-home sorts that make homework clear, meaningful, and easy to manage across all four Words Their Way spelling stages.

These word lists align with Words Their Way (3rd Edition) developmental stages — Letter Name-Alphabetic, Within Word Pattern, Syllables & Affixes, and Derivational Relations — and are appropriate for 1st–6th grade spellers, including early learners and students needing differentiation or remediation in upper elementary.

WHAT'S INCLUDED FOR EACH WORD LIST

  • Take-home word list printable with suggested practice activities
  • Cut-apart words for sorting at home or in the classroom
  • Half-page and 3-per-page versions to save paper and simplify prep
  • Sorting cards for small group or independent practice
  • Homework letter to parents for each new unit
  • Teacher tips for launching and maintaining a consistent routine

HOW THIS RESOURCE HELPS YOU & YOUR STUDENTS

  • Creates a consistent home-school connection
  • Keeps at-home practice manageable — just 10–15 minutes a day
  • Builds mastery through repeated, hands-on exposure
  • Offers flexibility for homework, centers, or small groups
  • Strengthens connections between spelling, reading, and writing
  • Saves planning and prep time while keeping instruction aligned

DEVELOPMENTAL STAGES INCLUDED

Letter Name-Alphabetic Stage — Typically kindergarten through early first grade, though older students may also benefit. Focuses on beginning consonant sounds, short vowels in CVC words, word families, digraphs, blends, preconsonantal nasals, early r-controlled vowels, and contractions.

Within Word Pattern Stage — Typically late first through early third grade. Students explore common and less common long-vowel patterns, r-controlled vowels, diphthongs, ambiguous vowels, and other vowel teams as they move beyond simple CVC words.

Syllables & Affixes Stage — Typically beginning in third grade and extending into upper elementary. Focuses on multisyllabic words, inflectional endings, syllable juncture patterns, prefixes, suffixes, compound words, homophones, and key spelling generalizations.

Derivational Relations Stage — Typically grades 3–6 and beyond. Students study prefixes, derivational suffixes, consonant and vowel alternations, and Latin and Greek roots — connecting spelling to meaning, vocabulary, and morphology.
