Make confusing suffix spellings easier for students to figure out. These -ABLE and -IBLE suffix games teach students a helpful rule of thumb: -ABLE is usually added to base words and -IBLE is usually added to word roots, in words like enjoyable, profitable, invincible, and edible.
The games are aligned to Words Their Way: Word Sorts for Derivational Relations Spellers (3rd Edition), Unit 8, Sort 34, but they work alongside any word study or morphology program. They're designed for students in the middle of the Derivational Relations stage, with words suited to upper elementary and early middle grades, who have already worked with the meanings of the words, roots, and affixes in this unit.

ABOUT THE DERIVATIONAL RELATIONS STAGE
This stage is where students begin connecting spelling with meaning on a deeper level. Typically spanning grades 4-6 and beyond, students at this level are proficient with foundational spelling patterns and ready to explore advanced word study concepts. Instruction focuses on prefixes, suffixes, derivational suffixes, consonant and vowel alternation, and the study of Latin and Greek roots. By analyzing how words are built, students strengthen spelling while expanding vocabulary and overall language skills.
