Teaching r-controlled vowel patterns, how R changes the vowel sound in AR, ER, IR, OR, and UR words, the vowel teams ARE, AIR, EAR, EER, ORE, OAR, OUR, and URE, and W-influenced r-controlled vowels? This Words Their Way aligned Within Word Pattern Unit 4 Activity Pack brings together four of the most-used word study printables in my store: Fill in the Missing Letters, Discovery Word Searches, Word Study Notebook Activities, and the Word Lists and Homework Routine. Now your students' whole routine is organized and ready to print in one run!
The activities are aligned to Words Their Way: Word Sorts for Within Word Pattern Spellers (3rd Edition), Unit 4, Sorts 26-34. You'll typically see Within Word Pattern spellers in 2nd and early 3rd grade, but if you're running differentiated word study groups, use these with any students whose spelling inventory places them in this stage.

WHAT'S INCLUDED
Word Lists and Spelling Homework (9 lists)
Take-home word list printables with suggested practice activities, cut-apart words for sorting, half-page and 3-per-page versions to save paper, sorting cards for small group or independent use, a parent letter for the unit, and teacher tips for launching the routine.
Unlock the List (9 puzzles)
A fill-in-the-missing-letters activity that turns the weekly word list into a puzzle. Students encounter their list with vowels, blends, digraphs, and word parts missing and work to unlock it. As they solve words, they begin noticing connections between them, which pushes them to analyze the vowel sounds and spelling patterns behind the sort. Answer keys included.
Discovery Word Searches (9 searches)
A blind word search with no accompanying word list, because the goal is for students to discover and seek out correctly spelled words themselves. After finding two or three words, students start to see the pattern emerging, which helps them predict the rest of the sort. Available 1-per-page with a sorting chart and 2-per-page for gluing into word study notebooks. Answer keys included.
Word Study Notebook Activities (16 activity sheets)
Activity sheets that scaffold students into deeper analysis of the unit's concepts. Students make words with r-controlled vowels, distinguish between the patterns that spell similar r-controlled sounds, complete words by identifying the missing r-controlled pattern, and sort words by the vowel that comes before the R. One to three sheets per sort, with answer keys.

ABOUT THE WITHIN WORD PATTERN STAGE
This stage is where students move past single-syllable short vowel spelling and begin studying vowel patterns in depth. Students at this level can spell most consonant sounds and short vowels correctly and are ready to explore long vowel patterns, r-influenced vowels, diphthongs, and complex consonant patterns. Instruction focuses on how the same vowel sound can be spelled several different ways, and students learn to recognize the patterns that signal each one. By sorting and comparing words, students strengthen spelling accuracy while building the pattern recognition that supports fluent reading.
