Each word list is aligned to Words Their Way (3rd Edition) Within Word Pattern stage and is appropriate for 2nd grade and early 3rd grade spellers, as well as for differentiation and remediation in upper grades.
HOW IT WORKS
Students encounter their weekly or bi-weekly spelling word list with missing letters — vowels, word parts, beginning and ending consonants, blends, digraphs, and more — and are challenged to "unlock the list" by filling in the blanks. As students crack the code, they begin noticing connections among words, analyzing spelling patterns, vowel sounds, and word structures to uncover the word study focus. Use it as an entry point into a new word study list or as a reinforcement activity after students have completed their sorts.

ABOUT THE WITHIN WORD PATTERN STAGE
In this stage, students move beyond simple CVC words and begin exploring the many ways vowels can be spelled. Typically spanning late first grade through early third grade, students can usually read most one-syllable words but may struggle to spell them correctly. They are now ready to study common and less common long-vowel patterns, r-controlled vowels, diphthongs, ambiguous vowels, and more.
