Ready to wrap up the common long vowel patterns? These CVVC vowel team review games give students practice with five long vowel teams: AI, OO, EE, EA, and OA. Students review words like wait, zoom, need, beast, and toast in a partner guessing game and an independent four-in-a-row activity.

The games are aligned to Words Their Way: Word Sorts for Within Word Pattern Spellers (3rd Edition), Unit 2, Sort 17, but they work alongside any word study program. They were developed with 3rd-5th graders in mind and fit students at the beginning of the Within Word Pattern stage who have been introduced to long vowels, spell CVCe words with some success, and are ready to learn the CVVC pattern.

WHAT'S INCLUDED

Guess My Word Game (Partner Game)

Each student secretly chooses a word on their board, then partners take turns asking questions about vowel patterns and sounds to narrow down the answer. The recording sheet keeps students accountable and helps them think carefully about each vowel team.

  • Teacher directions
  • 3 Guess My Word boards (1 make-your-own)
  • Student-friendly directions
  • Recording sheet
  • Answer key

Four In A Row (Independent Activity)

Students spin for a vowel pattern, find an incomplete word on the game board that follows that pattern, and complete it. They can build the word with letter tiles before recording it, and the goal is to cover four words in a row vertically, horizontally, or diagonally.

  • Teacher directions
  • 3 word boards
  • 2 spinners with student-friendly directions
  • Letter tiles for building words
  • Recording sheet
  • Answer key

ALSO INCLUDED

  • Black and white and color versions of everything

ABOUT THE WITHIN WORD PATTERN STAGE

This stage is where students move past single-syllable short vowel spelling and begin studying vowel patterns in depth. Students at this level can spell most consonant sounds and short vowels correctly and are ready to explore long vowel patterns, r-influenced vowels, diphthongs, and complex consonant patterns. Instruction focuses on how the same vowel sound can be spelled several different ways, and students learn to recognize the patterns that signal each one. By sorting and comparing words, students strengthen spelling accuracy while building the pattern recognition that supports fluent reading.
