Not sure where to start your students in spelling and word study? This 64-word Upper-Level Spelling Placement Inventory helps you see which spelling patterns students can apply and find the best place to get started with the Engaged Spelling, Words Their Way aligned word study units. Use the results to build manageable word study groups and plan what to teach first.
Recommended for grades 2–6, the inventory follows the developmental spelling stages used in Words Their Way: Letter-Name Alphabetic, Within Word Pattern, Syllables & Affixes, and Derivational Relations. The words follow the Engaged Spelling Continuum, so you can see where a student starts making repeated spelling errors and identify a likely starting unit.
✅ What’s Included
1. Upper-Level Spelling Inventory & Teacher Call-Out Guide
The 64 assessment words come with sentences to read aloud. Teacher directions explain how to administer the inventory, score student responses, and use the results for placement.
2. Student Recording Sheets
Choose from two versions. Students write each word as they hear it, giving you a look at the spelling patterns they can apply independently.
3. Individual Scoring & Placement Sheet
Record correctly spelled words by stage and look for the first cluster with two or more errors. The placement band helps you identify a likely instructional starting point and record the unit where the student should begin.
4. Class Placement Data & Grouping Templates
Bring individual results together on the class placement sheet, then organize students into word study groups. You can see which stages and units your class needs without creating a separate plan for every student.
5. Display Slideshow PDF
Optional picture cues for all 64 assessment words give students a visual reference as you call out each word.
6. Detailed Engaged Spelling Scope & Sequence PDF
Open this separate PDF when you want to dig deeper. It shows the Engaged Spelling units, which inventory items assess them, and which units the inventory does not test.
✅ How to Use It
You do not need to give all 64 words in one sitting. Plan to administer the inventory across 3–4 days, using the natural stopping points in the call-out guide. You can begin farther along the continuum when you already know students have mastered earlier patterns, or stop with a student once their starting level becomes clear.
After scoring, look for the first cluster where a student misses two or more words. Use the class placement sheet to spot natural groups, then begin each group with its identified unit.
⭐ Why I Created This Inventory
I created this assessment to take the guesswork out of where to begin with spelling instruction. I expanded the original inventory to 64 words and score whole words rather than individual spelling features, so the results can point you to a specific Engaged Spelling unit to teach first.
The rest of my Engaged Spelling resources follow the same developmental spelling continuum. Once you’ve placed your students, you can build an explicit, systematic word study routine around the patterns they’re ready to learn.
✅ Why Teachers Use This Inventory
- Find a specific starting unit for instruction
- See patterns across the class before forming differentiated word study groups
- Connect assessment results to the Engaged Spelling resources that teach those patterns
- Use the slideshow’s picture cues when administering words aloud
- Refer to the separate scope and sequence when planning what comes next
⭐ Once your students are placed, look for the matching Engaged Spelling Words Their Way aligned unit here in my store to move from assessment into instruction!
