Perspective taking is a skill students get better at with practice. These Perspective Taking and Compassion & Empathy Scenario Cards give 3rd through 6th grade students 64 relatable social situations to analyze, so they can understand other people's points of view and choose responses that show empathy and compassion.

One set shows examples of people responding with compassion, and the other set asks students to think through both people's perspectives and decide how to respond. Two empathy worksheets guide students' thinking for each set.

WHAT'S INCLUDED

  • Examples of Compassion & Empathy Cards (32 cards): each card includes a picture and an example of someone responding to a situation with empathy and compassion. Students identify the compassionate action and analyze how it made both people feel.
  • Perspective Taking Scenario Cards (32 cards): relatable social scenarios where students analyze both people's perspectives and motivations and decide how to respond with compassion and empathy
  • Two empathy worksheets: a response/reflection sheet for the compassion cards and a worksheet for evaluating each perspective taking scenario
  • Task card recording sheet
  • Google Slides version for display and whole-class discussion

HOW THIS RESOURCE HELPS YOU AND YOUR STUDENTS

  • Students see concrete models of what empathy and compassion look like before practicing those responses themselves.
  • Analyzing both people's perspectives helps students understand why someone might act or feel a certain way.
  • The empathy worksheets give you a record of each student's thinking about appropriate responses to social situations.
  • The cards work for whole-group discussion, small group lessons, individual work, morning meetings, or school counselor lessons.
