Preconsonantal nasals are some of the trickiest sounds for young spellers to hear. These -NG, -NT, and -MP nasal sound games help students compare words that end in a single final consonant with words that end in -NG, -NT, or -MP, like ran, rang, clam, and clamp, so students learn to listen for the nasal sound before the final consonant.
The games are aligned to Words Their Way: Word Sorts for Letter Name-Alphabetic Spellers (3rd Edition), Unit 6, Sort 53, but they work alongside any phonics or word study program. They're designed for students at the end of the Letter Name-Alphabetic stage who spell most CVC words correctly, including words with blends and digraphs, but find preconsonantal nasals tricky because the nasal sound is hard to hear and can make the Short Vowel less clear.
WHAT'S INCLUDED
Abracadabra Board Game (Partner Game)
Students take turns drawing a picture or word card and covering a CVC word on the game board that can be transformed into a new word, like ran to rang. Students try to collect the most words to win, and the recording sheet makes it easy to check their work.

ABOUT THE LETTER NAME-ALPHABETIC STAGE
This stage is where students connect the letters they know to the sounds those letters make. Students at this level recognize most letters and are ready to study beginning and ending consonants, word families, digraphs and blends, and short vowels in CVC words. Instruction focuses on hearing the sounds inside a word and matching each one to the letter that spells it. By sorting pictures and words by sound, students build the letter-sound knowledge that supports both early spelling and early reading.
